October 11th is Pet Obesity Awareness Day
An estimated 59% of cats and 54% of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese. Pets with obesity are at increased risk for developing serious weight related disorders such as diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, kidney disease, cancer, and more.
If your pet is overweight, an effective individualized weight loss program can be achieved with appropriate caloric restriction, diet selection, exercise and behavior modification of both the pet and owner.
Not sure if your furry friend is a bit too plump? Use the body condition scale below to find out, and be sure to discuss your findings with your veterinarian at your pet’s next visit.
